Get Your Magnesium Up!! By Adam T. Stewart, DC

Magnesium is the fourth (4th) most abundant mineral in the body. It is involved in multiple aspects of metabolism and is a required co-factor for over 300 regulatory enzymes. You need magnesium for carbohydrate, fat, and protien utilization and it regulates skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle contraction, as well as controlling calciums influx into cells. Magnesium does so much more that it will take several blogs to give all important stuff it does.
So what does all of this mean? Without sufficient magnesium, you can have a number of symptoms, such as unusual tiredness, muscle spasms, hypertension, asthma, tension headaches, constipation, wheezing with exercise, heart palpatations and more.
So where do we get magnesium?? Magnesium rich foods include nuts, beans, avacado, whole-grain cereals, cocoa, and seafood. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for magnesium varies with age, pregnancy and lactation. For women over 30 yrs of age the RDA is 320mg per day, with pregnancy increasing that to 400mg per day. Men over 30 yrs of age require 420mg per day. Some experts believe the RDA under estimates daily needs and a range of 500-750mg may be more realistic. So…Keep Your Magnesium UP!
