FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?

Chiropractic is a science, art and philosophy that believes the nervous system controls and coordinates all functions of the body. If the spine is misaligned the body goes into a state of dis-ease.

WHAT CONDITIONS CAN CHIROPRACTIC HELP?

Lower Back Pain, Neck/Back Stiffness, Headache/Migraines, Bursitis/Shoulder Pain, Sciatica/Leg Pain, Pinched Nerves/Discs, Muscle Strains and More

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT?

An adjustment is a gentle manipulation of a vertebra of the spine utilizing the hands. This adjustment realigns the bone to remove pressure off the nerve. This allows the body’s own healing properties to restore health.

WHY DO I NEED SO MANY ADJUSTMENTS?

Most chiropractic problems can’t be fixed with just one adjustment. Like anything, the spine and the muscles surrounding it take time to heal and return to normal. Though the pain may go away after the first adjustment, the problem is most likely still there. Frequent adjustments are a way to prevent the pain from coming back and to keep progressing toward optimum health.

WHY DO I NEED X-RAYS?

An x-ray is the best way for the chiropractor to see the spine. Initial x-rays are taken to ensure there is nothing that will complicate chiropractic treatment or prevent the patient from reaching recovery. It also enables the chiropractor to better see the misalignments in the spine and how to correct them.

WHAT IS “THERAPY”?

In addition to spinal adjustments, the doctor may recommend some kind of therapy to enhance your chiropractic treatment. The more common therapies we perform include ice, heat, interferential stimulation, intersegmential traction, ultrasound, and laser therapy.

WHAT IS MYOFASCIAL RELEASE?

Myofascial Release is a hands-on technique which applies sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and headaches, and to restore motion.

DO YOU ADJUST CHILDREN?

Yes! Children of all ages are excellent candidates for chiropractic care. Because of the traumatic experience of birth, we have given chiropractic care to babies who are only hours old. Starting a child with chiropractic care early can help avoid chiropractic problems as an adult. It can also help with allergies, strengthen their immune system and give them an overall healthier childhood.

IS CHIROPRACTIC SAFE FOR WOMEN WHO ARE PREGNANT?

Yes. Pregnant women can definitely benefit from chiropractic care. Regular adjustments can help relieve some of the unpleasant symptoms of pregnancy such as back pain. Chiropractic care is also beneficial for the unborn babies as chiropractic care can help prevent complications of labor.

WHAT IF I’M FEELING FINE?

Just because you feel fine doesn’t mean that you really are fine. A lack of back or neck pain doesn’t mean that the spine is healthy. Sometimes after a few chiropractic visits, the symptoms go away, but often, the problem remains, and it will take more chiropractic treatment to actually solve the problem. Continuing chiropractic care even when you are feeling fine will keep you on the road to eventually feeling great!

WHAT IF I’M NOT FEELING WELL?

If you have an appointment scheduled and you are not feeling well at the time, it may benefit you to go ahead with your appointment. While you should stay home or seek medical attention if you’re highly contagious, chiropractic can help a number of illnesses and symptoms ranging from migraines to allergies to earaches. If you’re having trouble deciding whether to keep or reschedule your appointment, give us a call and we’ll help you decide.

SHOULD I USE ICE OR HEAT?

After an injury like a twisted ankle, a low back strain or sprain, or even a pulled muscle, the inflammatory process begins and lasts for about 24-72 hours. During that time, apply ice for 10-20 minutes at a time, as often as necessary. It’s also good to follow the R.I.C.E. rule—Rest, Ice, Compression (ace bandage wrap) and Elevation. Never apply ice directly to the skin. Wrap the ice pack in a moist towel, then place on injured area. If you don’t have an icepack, use a bag of frozen peas or other small, round vegetables. Once the swelling or inflammation has gone down, you can apply heat. Moist heat is preferred over a dry heat as to not dehydrate the muscles. Typically moist heat is applied for 20-30 minutes at a time. Always ask your doctor which modality or therapy would be best if you aren’t sure.
